The Ring by Kōji Suzuki5/12/2023 Ring is the thriller that spawned the entire J-horror craze. A blockbuster movie in Asia as well as a hit DreamWorks remake, the novel sold almost 3 million copies in Japan. Ring is not only a chillingly told horror story but also a shrewdly intelligent and subversive commentary on the power of imagery and contagious consumerism. The description of the act, of course, has been erased from the videotape, and the journalist’s work to solve the mystery assumes a deadly urgency. Amid a series of bizarre and frightening images is a warning that the viewer will die in exactly one week unless a certain act is performed. Intrigued by the coincidence, a journalist investigates and learns of a videotape that the four watched together a week before dying. One night in Tokyo, four healthy teenagers die one after another of heart failure.

Young Avengers, Vol. 3 by Kieron Gillen5/12/2023 Clark is a composer, and I’m not sure if he’s worked in comics before, but he and Higgins make a very good team. Beyruth’s art is really nice, and while the music has to be imagined, I can tell it swings. This single issue accomplishes a lot – it paints a vivid portrait of this time and place, and the ways in which musicians have to hustle to make ends meet. He connects with an up-and-coming cornet player who shows him the ropes, and even gets him a regular gig at a whorehouse, which is against the wishes of the woman raising him. “Ace” is a young clarinet player living in WWI era New Orleans, and he’s determined to play. This series looks like it’s going to be an anthology of sorts, but this first graphic novella-sized issue tells only one story. With Deep Cuts, I think that writers Kyle Higgins and Joe Clark, and artist Danilo Beyruth have figured it out, and have also created the example for people who try this in the future. Translating the emotions and experiences conveyed through the ear into a visual medium is not easy at all, yet I always find myself drawn to projects that make the attempt. Deep Cuts #1 – I love comics, and I love music, but I don’t often love comics about music.

Heart bones colleen hoover summary5/12/2023 With only two short months separating her from the future she’s built and the past she desperately wants to leave behind, an unexpected death leaves Beyah with no place to go during the interim. After carving her path all on her own, Beyah is well on her way to bigger and better things, thanks to no one but herself. Life and a dismal last name are the only two things Beyah Grim’s parents ever gave her. You follow their journey through the summer almost as if it is your own story.Ĭonsider if you like reading: Contemporary young adult romances with deep character development. Beyah and Samson are truly damaged and you keep with them to watch how they will heal. What kept me reading: It’s definitely the characters and how they were real, so complex. The only thing I can say I didn’t like (and why I gave it 4 Stars) is that sometimes it felt like I was always on the edge of understanding what the characters motivation was. What I didn’t like: There wasn’t a lot I didn’t like. The story kept me reading, and I loved the way the characters made me care. What I liked: This was my first time reading Colleen Hoover and I love her writing style. The way the orange and pinks pop made me want to pick this up immediately. The Title/Cover Draw: This is one of the most beautiful book covers I have read this year. AUTHOR: Colleen Hoover Ink Inc #HooverInkInc

The namesake a novel by jhumpa lahiri5/11/2023 She cannot find puffed rice, so she tries to recreate the snack using rice krispies cereal instead. In the first chapter we see Ashima pregnant with her first child, craving a spicy Indian snack sold by street vendors on roadsides in Kolkata. She has an intense yearning for the people and the places she has left behind. Ashok is busy with his work at MIT and Ashima’s heart twinges with pangs of loneliness. The newlyweds had an arranged marriage and now they must navigate life in a new land while still getting to know each other. Library Journal describes the novel as, “this poignant treatment of the immigrant experience, which is a rich, stimulating fusion of authentic emotion, ironic observation, and revealing details.” Booklist review says, “Lahiri's deeply knowing, avidly descriptive, and luxuriously paced first novel is equally triumphant as Interpreter of Maladies” Pulitzer prize winning author Jhumpa Lahiri’s first novel, The Namesake, narrates three decades of the lives of Ashoke and Ashima Ganguly as they leave India and settle down in Cambridge, Massachusetts in the 1960’s.

The mitten story animals5/11/2023 This is a great book to read with preschoolers and other young kids. This gave me an idea for a fun way to have her retell the story. After our most recent reading of the book as part of our Advent Picture Book Tree, we threaded a felt mitten and used our Toob animals to retell the story. Sometimes my daughter likes to just look through the pictures and retell the story in her own words. A neat feature of the illustrations is that Jan Brett placed a clue for what will happen next in the margin of each page. I'll let you read the book for yourself to find out how Nikki gets his mitten back. The illustrations in this book are stunning with their intricate details. It is stretched and stretched, but Baba's good knitting holds fast even when the big brown bear barges in. The story goes on to describe how one animal after another decides to snuggle into the warm woolen mitten. It tells the story of a boy, Nikki, who loses his newly made white mitten in the snow, just as his grandma, Baba, predicted he would. This post contains affiliate links. Stalked by the Billionaire by Emma Bray5/10/2023 This is why I feel that this scene was dubcon. He didn't ask her if she was sure about moving forward or anything BEFORE he went too far. He chose to keep her mind focused on the pleasure that he had given her rather than allowing her to think about what was happening. I felt that he knew that she might say no or that she wasn't ready. He does and then he is fully seated and it's too late for her to get back what he took, At this point, he tells her to tell him that he can move and that she wants him, wants this. In his head he says that he's going to continue while she's recovering from her first orgasm BEFORE she has a chance to think about what they're doing. That scene was difficult for me so I listened again to be sure that I heard what I thought I had heard and I had. **** Spoilers There was a scene that was dub con in my opinion. I recommend reading this book and forming your own opinion. She behaves very childishly with Nick and with the way that she deals with things that she doesn't want to. She acted like she was a carefree young woman. Nick did a lot of nice things for Daisy and her family. The characters were interesting and likable for the most part. It was entertaining and enjoyable with a couple of exceptions. |
